Se Rødovre-husenes sprængningseksperter i arbejde

Se en kavalkade over briternes bedrifter her.

Prøv at høre 5 min 30 sek inde Mitchell Hill.

It's sad but we here in the UK have built so many of these buildings that there is a great fund of experience here in blowing them (up or) down.

The names appear just to be the local names of the buildings, sometimes with an area name as well.

Sadly, so many of these blocks of flats were so badly designed, or used such compromised materials in their construction that the cheapest way to deal with them is to demolish them. Even this can lead to enormous costs. The big block of flats I lived in before moving to Denmark in 1987 was full of blue asbestos. The frame of the twin block was also badly rusted, but "our" block could be renovated and still stands having been stripped to the steel frame and rebuilt. The twin was destroyed by one or other of the firms that demolish in the way SafeDem do (AFTER the crocidolite and other nasties had been removed).

It seems a sad waste. These blocks are not very beautiful (English understatement) but they are quite pleasant to live in, just built to old-fashioned standards as cheaply as possible (usually).

Yes there are "cowboy" firms that get it wrong - I gather someone has found a piece about one of these. They only get it wrong once! (Their insurance companies don't like them doing this).

There was a series on English TV about 10 years ago, showing the work of a company like this one and with fascinating explanations as to exactly what has to be planned into such work. The reason for the multiple explosions is apparently that the building is carefully weakened before the explosive demolition, then critical parts (like the central reinforced concrete core) have to be destroyed first and after this has been done, the "ripple" of explosions breaks the steel structure up in a controlled way, so as to control the fall of the building.

A great video! I've watched it twice already and am just going back for a third time
