Catalysis in biodiesel production – understanding the work of catalyst in physical and chemical perspective.

For the past three and a half years of his study, Mohd Firdaus had investigated the kinetics and mechanism of biological and chemical catalyst for biodiesel production. Producing biodiesel from low quality plant oil via transesterification is a necessity in order to obtain a product that has similar properties to petrodiesel. In his study, a kinetic model based on enzymatic transesterification using a specific liquid lipase (Callera trans L) enzyme was developed. Using computer simulations and actual lab scale reactions, kinetic information such rate constants and rate coefficients were derived and assembled in order to construct the model.

The information provided by the model will help manufacturers to estimate the best condition for biodiesel production. The model was also compared to other enzyme system such as CALB.

The PhD degree was completed at Department of Engineering, Science and Technology Faculty, Aarhus University.
