I await with fascination the Europe-wide citizen action as everyone insists that radioactive waste stores not be in their "back-yard". As a triumph of hope over reality this EU directive will take some beating!
Incidentally, I'm also fascinated as to what long-life radioactive waste from medical research is expected. I worked for a number of years as Radiation Protection Adviser in a University with a leading international role in medical research. Apart from the odd sealed source (the majority of which were of short/medium half-life like Co-60 and Cs-137) I can't think of anything used in that university which would be of sufficient activity to register against the enormous activities in Nuclear Power waste and none of these longer lived sealed sources were used in medical research.
Perhaps someone would like to enlighten me?
