In English: Bill Clinton diffused false rumours concerning electric cars in Denmark

The former American president Bill Clinton told Jon Stewart on The Daily Show how American businessman Terry McAuliffe had sold 1.000 mini electric cars to Denmark. However, there are not that many electric cars in Denmark at all.

The audience applauded when Bill Clinton last Thursday diffused what turns out to be a false rumour concerning electric cars in Denmark in the ‘The Daily Show’.

The former president raised two fingers, turned to the host, Jon Stewart, and said:

»My friend Terry McAuliffe, who you know, went to China and bought not one, but two electrical car manufacturers and moved the jobs to Virginia and has already sold a thousand mini electrical cars to Denmark.«

Bill Clinton’s remark was part of the interview only shown on The Daily Show’s website. However, only some 300 electric cars have so far been licensed by Danish authorities, and research shows that none of the cars, which the former president was referring to, have yet been sold.

Terry McAuliffe is the owner of EuAuto, the manufacturer of the mini electric car Mycar. He bought the company in Hong Kong in May, and last month he visited the Danish island of Bornholm where ten electrical cars have been tested during the summer.

Lene Grønning, Head of Business Centre Bornholm and in charge of project Bright Green Island, confirmed negotiating a new contract with Bill Clinton’s friend with a deadline of the 4th of October. If the Business Centre Bornholm and Terry McAuliffe agrees, it will be “world news in Europe”, she predicted. She did not specify how many electric cars, if any, will be imported to Bornholm.

According to Lene Grønning the project is to be carried out by Bilhuset, one of the largest car dealers on Bornholm.

Bilhuset’s CEO Per Boesen made it clear that he has not purchased nor is planning to purchase 1.000 mini electric cars from Terry McAuliffe. However he is working on becoming the Danish distributor of Mycar.

»It would be great, but it impossible to sell 1.000 cars in one go,« the car dealer said.

»It is not realistic with an annual production of 5.000 cars, which must also cover the domestic market,« he added.

Mycar has not gone into production yet. The current version in use on Bornholm has lead acid batteries, space for two, a range of up to 110 kilometers, and a top speed of 64 kilometres per hour. The production model will have lithium batteries, a range of 150 kilometres and be slightly larger but still have space for two. The low price of 100.000 Danish kroner is to be its main selling point.

Per Boesen has watched Bill Clinton’s remarks about the mini electric cars in Denmark himself. Although he was not thrilled about being quoted for it, he wondered if the former president got caught up in the atmosphere of The Daily Show studio.

»There is a lot of American domestic politics in this subject,« Per Boesen pointed out when commenting on Bill Clinton’s remarks.
